- The American Translators Association,
founded in 1959, is the largest professional association of translators
and interpreters in the U.S. with over 8,500 members in more than 60
countries. ATA's primary goals include fostering and supporting the
professional development of translators and interpreters and promoting
the translation and interpreting professions. I joined ATA in 1992 and
earned my Accreditation for Brazilian Portuguese into English
Translator that same year. Please visit their site for more information on Accreditation Procedures and answers to your other questions.
- ATA's Portuguese Language Division-PLD
is one of the oldest. It was created in 1985 and since then has
assisted Portuguese language professionals regardless of the variety of
Portuguese they work with. Our members hail from all over: US, Brazil,
Portugual, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, England, Netherlands, Canada,
Singapore. Please read our newsletter, the PLData to learn more about us. I am proud to have served as Nominating Committee Chair
in 2003.
- ATA's Interpreters Division
has more than 1,500 members from 52 countries! It gives us interpreters
and those aspiring to grow in the profession the support and platform
needed for learning, sharing, validating our experiences, networking
with colleagues, and strengthening our presence as professionals. I
look forward to serving my colleagues and assisting them as
Administrator for the 2005-2007 term, just as I did as the 2003-2004
Division Assistant Administrator.
- ATA's Florida Chapter-FLATA
is one of its most active and fastest growing. When I took the helm as
Chapter President in June 2002 we had 126 members. Now we count more
than 200 members in various states and countries as far away as Sweden
and Austria!
True to its mission, FLATA promotes professional growth through
- Educational and networking opportunities
- Association with key organizations and agencies in the state of Florida
- Our newsletter, FLATAflash.
I joined the Chapter in 2001 and look forward to a long lasting association. Obs.: FLATA's charter was terminated in 2007.
